Human cultures all around the world have held long traditions of babywearing, many for thousands of years. In western societies babywearing was abandoned after industrialization, but has seen a resurgence in the past 50 years as caregiving trends have changed.

This has only been possible because of the deep seeded cultural traditions passed through generations of black, indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) communities.

kovi carriers operates on traditional, unceded territory and ancestral homelands of the Council of the Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations, as well as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac, and Fox tribes whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day. Today Chicago has the third-largest urban Native population in the United States, with more than 65,000 Native Americans in the greater metropolitan area and some 175 different tribes represented.

kovi would be remiss not to acknowledge the vital role of BIPOC communities in preserving the tradition of babywearing for everyone. Because of this, we are so excited to announce that kovi will be donating 10% of our profits each year to local BIPOC charities, with a focus on specifically supporting women and youth. All of the charities we support have been 3rd party vetted to evaluate the organization’s financial health, accountability, and transparency policies; ensuring the good governance and integrity of the organization.

We are currently working with New Moms, whose mission is to strengthen families by partnering with young moms as they progress towards housing stability, economic mobility, and family well-being. You can learn more about this wonderful organization at https://newmoms.org/.

kovi supports the inclusion of all in our babywearing community.
